Selena Gomez, star of Monte Carlo, may only be within the golden years of prime metabolism, but even the naturally fit actress has started to see the importance of a healthy diet. After her recent hospitalization for malnutrition and low iron levels, Selena Gomez has begun putting her diet at the top of her priority list. The teen queen has always been vocal about her unhealthy love for junk food in the past, saying,I do eat. The problem is I don’t eat right. And I do love everything that’s not good for me.”

So how is Selena Gomez changing up her diet to stay healthy and fit for her increasingly busy lifestyle? Increasing her vegetable, fruit, and protein intake. Here’s a look at Selena’s standard diet, as shared with Life & Style:

  • Breakfast (about 250 calories) “I like my mom’s eggs,” Selena Gomez says about her morning favorite. “She makes a mean omelet – she adds mushrooms, onions, cheese, the works.”
  • Lunch (about 350 calories) “I like to make sure I have protein, so sometimes I’ll eat meat, like turkey, when I’m out or on set,” says Selena, explaining how she keeps her energy up.

  • Dinner (about 850 calories) “I actually like to do my dinners Italian – It’s kind of fattening, but it’s my leeway,” she says. “I love lasagna.”
  • Snacks (about 300 calories) “Pickles fill you up and aren’t too bad for you,” she explains about her love for the strange veggies.

Shape Magazine also offered Selena some helpful tips for further improving her diet:

  • Focus on the fruits and veggies first. We recommend that Selena Gomez start each meal with a fruit or vegetable. Whether it’s as simple as an apple before lunch or a side salad before dinner, filling up on fruits and veggies first is a way to decrease your cravings for junk food and is much better for you!
  • Follow the 80-20 rule. Yes, you can still have a healthy diet and eat junk food! You just can’t have junk food be the only food you eat. If Selena Gomez followed the 80-20 rule where 80 percent of the foods you eat are unprocessed and whole and 20 percent are the more fun, splurge  foods, we guarantee she’d be on her way to being healthier!
  • Eat regular meals with protein. Because Selena Gomez says her iron levels were low, we recommend that she have a little protein with each meal. Whether it’s an egg, some turkey or some lentils and soybeans, these healthy foods are naturally high in iron and help keep you feeling full and energized.

Besides balancing the types of food she eats, Selena has undergone another change in her diet – adding vitamin supplements to ensure she gets her full range of nutrients. The change isn’t easy for the self-proclaimed “stubborn kid” who used to enjoy the luxury of eating whatever she wanted, but she gets by with a little help from her… mom. “She’s definitely shoving vitamins down my mouth and following me around,” says Selena Gomez.

Luckily, Selena’s hospitalization has opened her eyes to the value of eating right and staying healthy. She says she that by watching what she eats and maintaining a regular workout, she now feels much better.
