ABC Family actress Shay Mitchell plays Emily Fields, one-fourth of TV’s most troubled (yet most stylish) cliques, on the summer hit Pretty Little Liars. In order to play Emily – a varsity swimmer who dodges murder attempts on the side – Shay Mitchell manages to stay both pretty and little with an athletic yet creative fitness regimen.

A self-proclaimed “foodie,” Shay Mitchell admits that she often forgoes the diet part of keeping fit. “I’m a huge pasta and pizza lover. I can eat those every single day.” So how does she keep so fit? Mainly through workouts – and unorthodox workouts at that. Shay does have a personal trainer, whom she credits for her persistence. “Just knowing that you have to work out because someone is waiting for you helps.”

But more often, Shay’s workouts extend beyond the usual cardio routines or even being inside a gym; instead, she enjoys taking her exercise outdoors. “I’m pretty adventurous,” Shay Mitchell told Seventeen. “I love riding my bike from Venice to Santa Monica and doing that whole beach/boardwalk route.” An off-the-grid favorite spot of hers is an outdoor jungle gym in Santa Monica. “There are these huge, long ropes, and you climb them using nothing but your arms and legs. I love taking my friends there because they’re like, ‘You can’t do it. No way, Shay!’ Then I climb up the rope in like a minute, and they are blown away.” If you’re looking to add a bit of creative spin to your usual exercise routines, the world can be your literal playground.

If riding a bike along the beach or playing on a jungle gym sounds a little too childish, however, Shay’s costar and fellow Liar Ashley Benson recommends some of her gym favorites: Pilates, kickboxing, and bar method. Costar Troian Bellisario also stresses diet more – she advises against junk food and says her favorite snacks are dates. “It’s really important to know where my food came from and what kind of impact it’s making on the environment,” she says.
