Hayden Panettiere Stays Fit While Saving Dolphins

A couple weeks ago, The Cove won the Oscar for best Documentary Feature film. In The Cove, Hayden Panettiere, best known for her role in NBC’s Heroes, participates in a protest against the capture and brutal slaughter of whales and dolphins in Japan. Hayden is also spokeswoman for The Whaleman Foundation, whose mission is to protect marine animals from illegal fishing, pollution, and global warming. Although Hayden’s main motivation is saving sea creatures, she says free diving is a great workout.

In order to understand the animals Hayden fights to protect, she took up free diving. Free diving is deepwater swimming without scuba gear, and it is necessary skill for Hayden because scuba gear scares away the whales. Hayden says, “I like the excitement, and it comes in a lot of different ways. Sometimes it’s my work. Sometimes, it’s getting off my butt and feeling like I’ve accomplished something.”

Free diving allows Hayden to get close to the creatures she is fighting to save, and also provides a full body workout. She says, “I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life after a dive.” “Swimming works all your muscles – your core, glutes, quads, even the ones you didn’t know you had, like the little ones in your feet and hands!” Free diving also gets Hayden’s heart rate up. She says, “When you dive with dolphins, you have to swim fast to keep up!”

To prepare for deepwater swimming, Hayden lifts weights twice a week and runs for at least half an hour three times a week. She says, “It’s all about getting your heart rate up and building endurance.” Hayden also practices holding her breath so she can swim deep enough to see the whales. Her record is a 60-second, 60-foot deep dive.
