Little over a year ago, Mad Men-star January Jones, who plays Betty Draper, was scolded by the show’s producers for looking too thin. A criticism seldom heard by Hollywood starlets. At an AMC network party, January Jones told reporters, “I got told a couple of days ago that I look too skinny, and I was in trouble.” She said, “I’m naturally pretty thin, so I’m trying.” Imagine that – being criticized for a healthy diet and sticking to a workout routine.

According to a recent interview with Tatler magazine, January Jones says Mad Men producers continue to push the hourglass shape. Jones said, “They tell us to gain weight, gain weight, gain weight, because they want a soft, voluptuous woman which they were [back then] which is beautiful, as it should be.” According to Jones, Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner advises the ladies to eat a healthy diet but avoid tough workouts at the gym. “He would prefer we didn’t work out and that we eat really well, so we look like healthy women”

Now, January Jones agrees with the Mad Men producers. She wants viewers to know “it’s OK to have curves and be a woman.” “I wish more women would realize that’s what men like.” To maintain her voluptuous figure, Jones says this about her diet, ”I eat whatever is at craft services. I’m a big eater. I’m from South Dakota, so meat, potatoes, carbs.” Now that’s a diet that’s easy to follow.

Furthermore, she has become a fan of the girdles she wears on set. She says, “It gives you such a nice shape.”

Even if indulging on meat and potatoes while wearing a girdle sounds unappealing to you, it is always healthy to embrace your body. Balance and acceptance is often the key to health and a happy life. In an era consumed by diet fads and workout trends, it is refreshing to hear the classic hourglass shape has not gone completely out of style.
