The “300 workout” first appeared on the Men’s Health website in video form as demonstrated by Craig Ballantyne of Turbulence Training.  Contrary to popular belief Ballantyne did not create this workout but his YouTube video demonstration of the workout has been viewed over 1 million times.

The original “300 rep Spartan Workout” was created by Mark Twight for actor Gerard Butler.  Butler talks about his grueling 4 months of training for the movie in this interview with Men’s Health.

“You know that every bead of sweat falling off your head, every weight you’ve pumped — the history of that is all in your eyes,” says Butler of his dedication. “That was a great thing, to put on that cape and put on that helmet, and not have to think, Shit, I should have trained more. Instead, I was standing there feeling like a lion.”

“One actor from 300, Andrew Pleavin, completed the workout in 18 minutes,11 seconds,” says Ballantyne.  “He didn’t practice this workout…and neither did I. My time? 19:07.  My butt was kicked by a Hollywood actor!”
